When considering the ATM placement of your new machine, the safety and security of the users should be your utmost concern.

Many of us don’t think twice when using an ATM, and then tragedy happens. You hear about the horror stories of people getting robbed, people’s identification getting stolen, or somebody being physically harmed.

Robbers are very aware that someone who just finished using an ATM has cash. In fact, an ATM crime is most likely to occur between seven and midnight.

There are several safety tips you can follow to avoid a tragedy.

• Don’t use an ATM if the lights above and surrounding the machine are out.

• Take someone along with you, especially after dark.

• When driving to an ATM, lock your car doors after exiting.

• Have your keys ready so you can get back in the car quickly after using the ATM.

• Be aware of anyone on foot when you’re using a drive-up ATM. Stop the transaction and go if you see someone approaching.

• Keep your windows rolled up and your car locked when using the drive-up ATM.

• Avoid any ATMs that appear messed up or wrecked, and never accept help with a “broken ATM” from a stranger.

• Don’t write down or share your PIN with anybody. We recommend that you change your PIN annually. Pick a specific date like your birthday so you’ll never forget.

• Block the ATMs reader with your body, so anyone who might come up from behind you doesn’t see your number.

Additional safety pointers include:

• Try using an ATM in a well-lit public place and stay away from remote ATMs. • Never count or show your money because it could open you up to an attack. • Beware of card skimmers or devices affixed to an ATM to steal your card’s numbers. If the ATM card slot feels loose or the keypad just isn’t right, then search for a different ATM to use.

You also may be relieved to know that most ATMs come equipped with two kinds of cameras.

The first camera is in an obvious place that is either over the camera or very nearby. The other camera is hidden and arranged so that it records the customer’s face. The obvious camera is a purposeful deterrent from a crime. However, the other camera does a fantastic job of identifying culprits trying to break into a machine.

Due to the size of memory that videos use, these cameras are not recording 24/7. As a matter of fact, the hidden camera usually takes a series of still photographs. Source: (Automated Teller Machines with Security Cameras (streetdirectory.com)

While it’s vital to be aware of your surroundings when visiting an ATM, keeping your debit and credit cards safe when you are home or at work is essential.

These safety tips include:

• Store your cards in a secure place.

• Always put your wallet that contains your ATM cards and other identifying information in a safe drawer at home or the office. Leaving your wallet out on a counter or desktop will only lead to possible identity theft.

• Report stolen or misplaced cards as soon as you find out they are missing. Let the bank know immediately so they can prevent the cards from being used. It’s no problem to get another card.

• Keep your PIN a secret

• Keep your Personal Identification Number a secret even from your family and trusted friends. And never write it down.

• Stay away from telephone and email scams

• Unfortunately, telephone and email scammers are poised to steal your money. Avoid giving your card information to anyone, and if your bank calls to ask for account verification, it’s a scam.

• Double-check your printed receipts

• Always double check your ATM receipt after getting cash and reconcile your receipts to your bank statement as additional protection from fraudulent transactions.

You might be surprised to know that your bank has put into place many features to keep your money safe. Along with security cameras, they have several other ways to protect you from criminals.

Other card safety features include:

EMV chip safety

These days, many banks issue cards that have Europay, MasterCard, and Visa (EMV) chips embedded into the cards. This chip makes it more difficult for criminals to skim your card successfully.

PIN Keypad Covers

PIN Keypad Covers limit the visibility of the card reader to add extra protection against those looking to steal your PIN.

ATM Alarms

Believe it or not, many ATMs have alarms to deter the physical tampering with the machine.
