Refurbishing any room in your home is one of life’s great pleasures isn’t it? You get to really put some of you and your family’s personality into your home. You can replace and upgrade anything you want you can choose designs and colors and even new furniture.
With some rooms it is easier than others take for example the bathroom the main feature is the shower or bath, and everything revolves around that. With the kitchen it is usually the island or the stove depending on where it is placed. But when it comes to the lounge or living room it becomes a little more complicated because the center piece of the room especially nowadays is the TV.
And let’s face it TVs are not getting smaller in fact they are getting bigger with the average television now at least 50 inches.
Now you can just hang your TV on the wall however I personally find it a little unsightly as you have all the cables hanging below and if you have cable TV then where does that go as the TV itself is mounted on the wall this is where a built in TV cabinet comes into play.
A built in TV cabinet not only keeps the TV in place and out of sight but also provides ample storage space for those little things we find around our lounge and also come with additional shelving for cable boxes and games consoles which are becoming more of a mainstay in the lounge than ever before.
And yes, the initial image of a built in tv cabinet may draw back memories to the huge room eating pieces of the past but nowadays they have evolved much like the technology they encompass. So, allow me to explain why the finishing touch in your room should be a built in TV cabinet.
Size matters
When carrying out a refurbishment and choosing new products size does matter. You wouldn’t choose a sofa that takes over the whole room so why would you choose a built in TV cabinet that is too big or too small for what you need.
My rule of thumb when choosing a built in TV cabinet is too first consider how much storage you would like to get from the piece as this will limit your options in terms of style.
Generally, I go with the motto less is more and opt for a subtle piece with some storage underneath however if you are looking to maximize the storage space then you can opt for a design with storage channels at the side also.
Height
Following on from the size issue nicely it is important to determine the ample viewing height one of the largest issues I have found with mounting the TV on the wall is that it tends to be mounted to high meaning you have to look up at it to watch it which over time causes neck pain and doesn’t make for comfortable viewing.
The best way to determine your viewing height is to sit on the sofa and have a friend measure where the TV is proposed to go this will allow you to get an idea of which height of built in TV cabinet will work for your room.
Choosing the right style for your room
Once you have the size and height down you can then think about which style of built in TV cabinet you would like. This is the exciting part as there are so many stunning designs out there too chose from. However, remember to consider how the style of the piece you choose will interact with the rest of the room the aesthetics have to match. If you have a pine table with pine shelves don’t opt for a mahogany built in TV cabinet, you get the idea.
Budget
Unfortunately, regardless of the room we are refurbishing budget always comes into play. Luckily when it comes to built in TV cabinets there is such a wide range available that you will be able to find one to suit your budget.
If however you are one of the lucky few that has no budget then why not go completely bespoke and commission a custom piece.
Summary
Built in TV cabinets are making a strong comeback and in my opinion are essential to the modern home they complete the look whilst providing a useful storage space and stylish back drop for your television.
