A common fallacy that’s heard nowadays is that “they don’t make things like they used to”, usually referring to the short lifespan of many modern goods. This is mostly due to the use of synthetic materials and modern means of production that have forgone durability for quickly replicable manufacturing. While this has made many common goods more affordable, it also means that we have to be more mindful about maintaining them to ensure we get the longevity we desire.

The importance of mattresses isn’t lost on anyone, certainly not those who have recently slept on anything besides one. Buying a new mattress can often be something of an ordeal, with many decisions to be made and then the effort of getting it from the warehouse to your bed frame. Whether you’re considering ultra plush mattresses or even a new futon, here are some maintenance tips that’ll ensure you get the most out of it.

Protective

Even though we often get into bed relatively clean, our mattresses are still prone to getting dirty over time. This can be caused by sweat, dead skin cells, animal fur, or even dust, so a holistic form of protection is often the best bet.

Mattress Protector

Covering either the top surface or the top surface and sides, a mattress protector consists of water-resistant materials to help protect against spills, bacteria, and some allergens. A key feature of them is that they still allow for considerable airflow and breathability, and they won’t take away from the comfort of those ultra plush mattresses.

Preventative

They say prevention is better than cure, and when it comes to preserving your mattress it’s quickly apparent why. Not only will preventing certain things from happening help to ensure your mattress will last, but it can also minimize any disruption or discomfort caused by common mishaps.

Breakfast out of Bed

Breakfast in bed has long been portrayed as some luxurious way of starting your day, at the risk of soiling your bedding and mattress. While it might seem nice to have your children or partner bring you something to enjoy on a Saturday or Sunday morning, even the smallest mistake can be costly.

On top of this, eating while you’re lying down can inhibit peristalsis, leading to acid reflux in those who are prone.

Limit Pet Access

Most owners of cats or dogs will allow their beloved furry friends to sleep alongside them in the bed of their own volition. This may be fine during the evenings, although if you leave your bedroom open while you’re out your cat or dog may be on and off the bed all day long.

Cats and dogs both have long and strong nails necessary for their survival, and these are particularly useful for getting up onto mattresses. They also both tend to get quite dirty, and can bring a myriad of bacteria and allergens into your bed each day without meaning to.

Instead of completely stopping them from enjoying bed with you, you may consider closing your bedroom door while you’re out and about. This can limit their use of the bed, and ensure a longer lifespan for your mattress.

Move Mattresses Carefully

Whether you’re putting it in for the first time, or moving house, every time you handle your mattress and jam it inside a vehicle you risk damaging its structure and outer layers. There are a few things you can keep in mind when moving your mattress:

- Transport them in a vehicle with adequate space

- Keep the plastic bag your mattress came in to protect it during transit

- Do not bend the mattress, and avoid any sags or creases by propping it up adequately

Proactive

Now that we’ve considered how you can protect your mattress and prevent common causes of damage, it’s time to look at what you can do proactively.

Clean Spills Immediately

Whether it’s a glass of water or something more serious, all spills on your mattress should be handled immediately. If you spilled water use a dry towel to soak up as much as possible, whereas if it’s something else use mild soap and a damp cloth initially before toweling up what you can.

Air and Dry it Regularly

This can be especially important in ultra plush mattresses that have soft upper layers prone to picking up and retaining moisture. If possible try to dry your mattress regularly by leaving it exposed with a dehumidifier or ceiling fan running, or a window open on a warmer day. If the weather permits, putting your mattress out in the direct sun for a few hours can help dry and air it out simultaneously.

Keep it Fresh

Not only should you be cleaning all of your bedding and linen regularly, but you can also change up the parts of the mattress you usually sit on. By sitting next to where you sleep every night you can create a droop that may impact your posture and thus your sleep hygiene. Change things up regularly and consider rotating your mattress to ensure that all of it is being used.
